An order for 50 copies of the Guide arrived last month from THE ANGEL HOTEL in Abergavenny, an excellent family-run Welsh hotel. On checking, I was surprised to see that the hotel had ordered an identical number of copies two months previously. Thinking there must be an error, I telephoned only to be told that it was no mistake—all the previous copies which had been put in the bedrooms had been pinched. My initial reaction was delight that the Guide was such a hot item that it was irresistible. But more sobering, have we now become a nation of thieves?
BROCCO ON THE PARK, Sheffield, Yorkshire which won a Cesar award this year as city hotel of the year is this month’s prize-giving hotel. A stylist Scandinavian chic interior makes Tiina Carr’s smart property a vibrant city hub. The bedrooms are modern, the food adventurous.

Alwyn Ellis from Llanfairpwllgyngyll, is the winner of last month’s prize of dinner, bed and breakfast for two at AEL Y BRYN, Eglwyswrw, Wales. This year’s guesthouse of the year, the hospitality is infectious. Robert Smith and Arwel Hughes, generous hosts, have thought of everything a guest might need including freshly baked Welsh cakes at teatime.
Fawlty Towers
‘The host’s over-the-top descriptions of the dinner verged on the ludicrous and make a prolonged theatrical act. Other guests raised their eyebrows or were speechless. One of them walked out, too weary to wait for his pudding.’
