Good Hotel Guide Review

The Cave-Browne-Cave family have kept a welcome in the hillside at their big, white hotel above Cardigan Bay since the days of silent film, when men wore bowler hats to the beach. This traditional hotel moves at its own gentle pace, and ‘one gets the impression that that is exactly what guests want’, writes a reader. ‘What a delight to stay here,’ says another. ‘The situation of the hotel and its tremendous views are a major draw.’ ‘Lovely practical bedrooms with decent bathrooms’ are decorated in marine colours, some with a sea view across road and railway. Most can accommodate an extra bed or cot, some can sleep two adults and three children, and there is a child-listening service. Family-friendliness extends to a playroom and outdoor play area, children’s supper and all-day lounge menu. ‘Staff are enthusiastic and welcoming’ and there are ‘lots of rooms to sit and relax’. At dinner, expect dishes such as Dover sole with prawn mousse or pan-fried marinated venison loin on vegetable purée. ‘Dinner was a delight. The menu changed each night, and we looked forward to it in anticipation.’ On sunny days, you can lunch on the terrace. (Peter Davies, Sara Hollowell, GB)
