Hotels in Dumfries and Galloway

In the beautiful lowlands of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway and the surrounding area is an outstanding location for an escape. From the rocky and sandy Solway Coast to the lush green inland forests and hills, it’s the place that inspired writers such as Robert Burns, and with good reason.

Romantic country house hotels and foodie restaurants with rooms

Famed as a romantic escape for lovers as the home of the famous destination of runaway weddings, Gretna Green, these days there are plenty of reasons to get married in this part of the world, to simply visit on a holiday with a partner or to celebrate a special occasion. For example, country house hotels such as Balcary Bay Hotel or Glenholme Country House offer guests exquisite and elaborate places to stay, but with all the warm welcomes that Scotland does so well.

Wildlife in Dumfries and Galloway is abundant, so walking holidays are replete with sightings of red deer in the forests and ospreys and red kites in the sky, while those looking for an adrenaline rush can take to windsurfing, sailing and mountain biking.

Country pursuits don’t have to be all about wild adventure however, a gentle walk or cycle will allow you to take in the scenery. Fishing is also a much-loved pastime in this corner of the world especially at the likes of Trigony House, a former 18th century fishing lodge, that also happens to be home to a contemporary spa.

As a part of the world where local produce is a prized feature, there are a number of beautiful restaurants with rooms, where the food is a key feature.  Blackaddie House, for example, offers a welcoming atmosphere on the River Nith, and is described as ‘well worth a detour for the food alone’.

Equally, the splendour of the Solway coast is perhaps best enjoyed from Cavens – a charming manor house where superb three course meals are accompanied by excellent wine.  If you’re lucky, the owner might even give you a tour of the private wine cellar.
