'A genuine oasis of tranquility', Angus and Jane Fordyce’s Georgian mansion is set in open countryside close to the dunes and salt marshes of the Solway coast. Guests are welcomed into a 'delightful lounge' amid antiques, paintings and cherished objects with coffee and cakes on arrival. The grandest bedroom, Criffel, named after a local hill that thinks it's a mountain, is huge. 'Our twin room overlooked the lawn and gardens and onward to the Solway Firth,' reported a reader, who was delighted to find it contained OS maps and a book of local walks. 'The room was light, well appointed and comfortable with a small sitting room. The bathroom was a little small.' At night, Angus cooks a 'very tasty and locally sourced' three-course dinner, and can accommodate special diets. 'Our sea bass was outstanding and the crab starter the following night sublime.' There is an 'excellent' and 'good-value-for-money' wine list. Breakfasts are ‘a highlight, with strong coffee, lovely black pudding and haggis’, the 'plumpest kippers we have ever eaten' and organic eggs from Mrs McMyn’s free-ranging Lohmann Browns or the hotel’s own hens.
