Good Hotel Guide Review
This 17th-century Carmelite convent was turned in the 19th century into a hotel by two Yorkshire women, hence the name. It is on a busy street (some bedrooms face this), but steep steps (‘helpful porters’ carry luggage) lead to a lovely, peaceful courtyard, shaded by a huge palm tree. Inside are vaulted ceilings, antique furniture, old chests, ceramic tiles, and artefacts. ‘The cosy wood-panelled bar has comfortable armchairs. My bedroom, spacious and clean, had an old-fashioned but well-appointed bathroom.’ Some rooms have been redesigned in modern style, some have an oblique view of the Tagus; others of Lisbon’s big Jesus statue. Many were refurbished in 2014, more will follow in 2015. The buffet breakfast is in the restaurant, a ‘bright room with blue azulejo tiles’ or in the courtyard. The restaurant is thought ‘over-priced, fussy’; but there are ‘lots of good authentic Portuguese restaurants around’.
