This is the only hotel within the walls of Sao Jorge Castle, and in fact was built on the site of the castle’s kitchens at the time that it served as the royal palace. A gorgeous lemon-coloured mansion, this boutique hotel has an inner courtyard with a fountains, a mansard and a garden, and offers a tranquil oasis only ten minutes’ walk from the city centre. Rooms are on the small side, which is common considering it’s a historic building, but all manage to combine a contemporary luxury feel with antique furnishings, wooden floors and exposed stone walls.
