Liked for its informal atmosphere, this 18th-century palace, managed by Diogo Laranjo, stands in the cobbled street of the same name (‘green windows’). Owned by the Cardoso and Fernandes families, it is filled with paintings, books and memorabilia of the novelist Eça de Queiroz, who once lived here. Portraits line a winding staircase. One reader advises: ‘Ask for a room overlooking the port.’ Another wrote: ‘My spacious bedroom had armchairs and good lighting.’ There is a reception lounge, ‘soothingly romantic’, and a top-floor library (with balcony) where guests can help themselves to a drink (honesty system) or a cup of tea from a small kitchen (biscuits are supplied). An ‘excellent’ buffet breakfast is served in the lovely walled garden (with water feature, wrought iron tables, huge parasols). Buses stop at the front door (the street can be noisy, but windows are doubled glazed). No restaurant: plenty nearby. The Museu Nacional de Arte Antigua (superb Portuguese primitives) is adjacent; York House (qv) is across the road.
