Isle of Mull: scenic locations and dog friendly hotels

If you have yet to visit the Inner Hebrides, you have yet to discover one of the most enchanting, rugged and awe inspiring parts of the UK.  The Isle of Mull is the second largest island in this mythical part of the world.  Off the west coast of Scotland it is a blissful amalgamation of wildlife, history, awe-inspiring vistas and mind broadening walks.

A world away from anything you have seen before, it is accessed by ferries from Oban, Lochaline and Kilchoan, and from Oban you are tantalised by this view dominated by the rocky peaks and green slopes of the Mull mountains.  It is a wilderness, but its also peaceful and wonderfully hospitable.  There is joy in exploring – fishing, hiking, kayaking, sailing and generally being outdoors by day, before retreating in the evenings to hearty food, fresh local produce and cosy nooks by the fire with a dram of whiskey in hand.

Showcasing the island’s warm welcome at its fines is Tiroran House, an elegantly appointed hotel with fairytale gardens brimming with waterfalls, a trout pond, rolling lawns and its own private beach.  It is the stuff that novels are written about, or indeed the place you may go to write a novel – at least when you’re not enjoying the Loch Fyne kippers and locally smoked haddock.

Also in this magical part of the world is Killoran House.  Surrounded by heather-clad volcanic rocks, the guesthouse is a favourite amongst dog owners, bringing four legged friends for what may well be the best walk of their lives, with views over the village and Loch Cuin, country style bedrooms and quite possibly the best cup of tea you’ve ever had.
