St Elizabeths House

St Elizabeths House

Plymouth

In Plympton St Maurice, on the edge of the city, this Georgian manor was once a convent. Now a hotel and events venue, tranquillity remains in calming, modern bedrooms and in the surrounding nine acres of gardens and sweeping lawns. Local and regionally sourced produce appears on the restaurant’s fine dining menus: perhaps curried white crab with pea panna cotta, pink grapefruit and fresh pea shoots; Tournedos Rossini – fillet of Devon beef on crispy crouton with chicken liver parfait, dauphinoise potato, wild mushroom and baby onion jus.

Where to hold a wedding in Devon

We are extremely lucky to have somewhere as beautiful as the West Country on our doorstep.  Devon’s natural beauty is what attracts people to this part of the world on holidays time and again.

From the popular seaside town of Salcombe with its ice cream coloured houses to the dramatic vistas of Dartmoor, it’s varied and awe-inspiring scenery alongside its plethora of home grown produce make it a superb choice for weddings and hospitality at any time of the year (although naturally the summer months make for better photos).

Fine dining at country house hotels are very much a part of the landscape in this part of the world, but equally the postcard perfect villages and towns with panoramic views of breathtaking seascapes make for extremely romantic backdrops for weddings.  Equally, hotels such as the Salcombe Harbour Hotel bring contemporary elegance to the seaside with modern decor and five star facilities and spa features, which of course allow the party plenty of time and space in which to get ready and take time to enjoy the surroundings.

The local produce is a particularly delightful feature as well – Devon is known for its beef as well as its clotted cream, and nothing says celebration quite like an afternoon tea.  Salcombe is also supremely well known for its Salcombe Dairy ice cream, made in a tiny factory in the harbour town and famed as far afield as Singapore Airlines, would you believe it?

For smaller weddings, hotels in the likes of Dartmouth, a quintessentially English seaside town with an abundance of history, are perfect, and for added entertainment the summer months are awash with festivals and regattas to add to the merriment.
