Good Hotel Guide Review

'It's ‘fiercely expensive’, but this Relais & Châteaux hotel in a chocolate-box village doesn’t stint on the traditional country-house luxuries, drapes, stripes, florals, sofas and chandeliers, antiques, and paintings (the Garden Suite, with a conservatory and private garden, has an original Matisse). Bedrooms are supplied with fruit and flowers, shortbread, Floris toiletries. ‘Overall very good,’ wrote a reader on a return visit. ‘Rooms beautifully furnished and lovely and warm.’ There is an indulgent spa. ‘We love the swimming pool and ambience.’ At dinner our returnee was a little disappointed that the new doorstep menu of hyper-local produce included no canapés or amuse bouche, ‘and we were told it changes infrequently’. Still, vegans have a plant-based menu, and there is more choice à la carte, with dishes such as Lyme Bay monk fish, burnt leek, garden carrots, saffron. You can eat more cheaply at sister property The Acorn Inn (see entry). ‘Breakfast was excellent, with the usual high-grade local offerings.' ‘Staff all first class. Despite cost will probably return.’ (Ian Dewey, Gareth Pearce, IB)

Comments about Summer Lodge

A return visit was another delight. This hotel is extremely well managed. Staff are professional, friendly, eager to assist, without being in your face. Our room was superbly furnished in true country house style. Downstairs, the attention to detail is commendable. Pool facilities still excellent. Covid precautions equally so. Gardens worth a visit in themselves. We again ate very well at dinner and breakfast. A pretty faultless experience; not a cheap stay , but worth every penny.! - Barbara and Ian Dewey - December 2020
My 93-year-old mother and I loved our stay at Summer Lodge, perfection without pretension, and impeccable service by all staff. The welcome at reception was warm and was sensitive to Covid safety. We had a twin premier room. In the Coach House, the only one of that kind on the ground floor. The beds were supremely comfortable. The bathroom was splendid. We took tea in the beautiful drawing room; Leaf tea was served charmingly, and the fine china made it special. Dinner was impeccable; a bonus was a separate vegetarian menu with interesting choices. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Breakfast too was lovely. - Jill Cox - November 2020
These standards achieved in room quality, service and dining are of a high order. Rooms are different in size and aspect, but without exception are beautifully and traditionally furnished. Staff are exceptionally well trained. A real a rare example of all-round quality. . - Ian Dewey - January 2020
Good as previous visit. Wonderful Christmas decorations in the grounds. Dined on the seven-course tasting menu - a memorable meal. Service top class too - Staff so professional, well trained and friendly. All pretty faultless! - Ian Dewey . - January 2019
