Good Hotel Guide Review
Thomas Hardy fans will be in their element at this local watering hole in Dorset, which was the model for ‘The Sow and Acorn’ in Tess of the d’Urbervilles. While Tess chose not to breakfast here, today’s literary pilgrim should stop in for a pint of Proper Job and a ploughman’s in one of two bars or the beer garden. Log fires burn cheerily in public spaces. A reader enjoyed a 'very good lunch' in the restaurant – so good, they returned the next day. Bread is fresh from the village bakery, veg from the garden, and dishes run from pub classics such as burgers and fish 'n' chips to more inventive choices, including hake with Thai red curry. Bedrooms vary in shape and size, though the ‘characterful old building’ can present challenges; a bay-windowed four-poster room proved cramped. The loft suite, under the eaves, despite sloping ceilings, has ample space for a family, with a double and single bedroom, lounge and large bathroom. 'Management was hands on', staff are ‘very friendly and efficient’ and everything runs like a ‘well-oiled machine’. For £15 guests can use the spa at sister hotel Summer Lodge (see entry).
