Good Hotel Guide Review

A ten-minute walk through National Trust land takes you from this single-storey hotel enfolded in a gorse-clad valley to a beautifully uncrowded beach. In the Makepeace family for three generations, it happily accommodates children with its flexible family suites and high tea for tinies. Book a cove-facing room for ‘a wonderful view down to the cove with the sea beyond’ framed by floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto a patio. The look is contemporary and unfussy, with extras such as books and board games. ‘We had a spacious family room,’ a reader reports. ‘The beds were very comfortable, with good-quality sheets.’ Another praises a ‘good-sized room with comfortable chairs’, a ‘well-designed bathroom with the best shower in a bath I have ever seen’. At dinner, long-serving chef Ian MacDonald uses prime local produce in his tempting menus. ‘Food was first class. Wonderful soufflé, pan-roasted salmon, hand-picked Salcombe crab.’ Awake to a full Devon breakfast and take a packed lunch to the beach, or enjoy a scenic walk along the coastline. ‘The night sky was a deep navy with stars aplenty.’

Comments about Soar Mill Cove Hotel

Bracing sea wind, ever-changing colours of the sea and the clear atmosphere provide spectacular views of the coastline for walkers to enjoy on the South West footpath The hotel is to be applauded for taking all necessary Covid 19 precautions. We had a spacious family room. The beds were very comfortable with good quality cotton sheets. Dinner was pleasant. A breakfast one appreciated the location of the hotel and its dining room. If you like sea views, this was a wonderful. We all had the Devonshire cooked breakfast. In particular the bacon and the creamy scrambled egg went down well. On afternoon, return from our cliff walk we had a pleasant complimentary cream tea with fresh tender strawberries, home made jam and currant scones. - Stephen Rees - November 2020
Well I’ve been going there for 30 years and my parents even longer. I love everything about it. It’s like a second home. Family run and staff are lovely. Food amazing and views stunning. Just love the place. - Harriet Morris - January 2020
Such a beautiful hotel with amazing rooms with sea views. The restaurant produces great food and a generous breakfast. The pool and spa are relaxing and the family owned hotel is very welcoming. - Louisa Walker - January 2020
It has everything you could wish for: amazing views and scenery to uplift and relax you . The food is delicious, fresh and varied . Staff are friendly, and keen to make your stay perfect. - Mr Gerald Taylor - January 2020
With its wide views over sloping lawns to the sea this is a pleasant lunch place. In fine weather we sit on a terrace under parasols, on cool days we sit in the lovely larger lounge with panoramic views. There is always something interesting on the menu – fish soup, risotto, goujons, etc. Cream teas are good too. A walk down though National Trust land leads to a lovely uncrowded beach with craggy rocks, and also to the coastal path. Many senior staff have been there for years. - CR - July 2019
