Southernhay House

A Roman Doric portico makes a swanky statement about this Grade II-listed Georgian house, but within lies a stylish yet relaxed and fun boutique hotel. Owners Deborah Clark and Tony Orchard ran Burgh Island Hotel, Bigbury-on-Sea (see entry) for almost 17 years before selling it, and do things with panache. Bedrooms wittily reference Southernhay’s original owner, an officer, diplomat and orientalist, who worked for the East India Company. They range from luxury, with super-king bed, a large bathroom, freestanding bath and walk-in shower, down to ‘intimate’, with no compromise on quality. ‘Sugar’ room is adorned with vintage Cuba posters. All rooms have luxury toiletries and a minibar. ‘The staff were lovely,’ readers relate. ‘Food good, beautiful house, lots of interesting furniture.’ 'Breakfast generous and beautifully presented.' The kitchen is open all day, and a monthly changing seasonal menu includes dishes such as pan-fried sea trout with wild garlic risotto, fresh pappardelle with beef ragù, or perhaps just a simple herb omelette.
