Good Hotel Guide Review

‘It’s like going back in time to more gracious living,’ writes a reader after an annual visit to the Ashworth family's hotel in sub-tropical gardens in a 'stunning location' above Carne Beach. This 'country-house hotel by the sea' is pricey, but other readers secured a last-minute deal for a ‘very comfortable and spacious room with great sea views’, and were 'delighted by our visit'. It’s the details that count – the books, magazines, fruit, flowers, cream tea… Sea-view rooms have a balcony or terrace. ‘The building has been extended to offer more luxury suites, very sympathetically and with good taste to fit into the landscape.' In the silver-service dining room, sit down to an ‘excellent five-course dinner’, locally sourced – maybe pan-seared calf's liver, Dover sole with Café de Paris butter, or lobster, and 'a sumptuous selection of puds'. 'I particularly enjoyed the hors d’oeuvres trolley, a bit of yesterday, perhaps, but great!’ You can eat more casually in (and outside) the Quarterdeck. 'Gardens in great shape for a winter's day, good indoor pool, tennis court.' 'A year spent without a visit to The Nare is a year wasted.' (Abigail Kirby-Harris, Ian Dewey, Peter Govier, and others)

Comments about The Nare

If this level of thoughtful comfort is "old fashioned" then count me in! there are many hotels who could take a leaf out of Toby's book. He is an excellent host in every way and his wife Katie has real flair as an interior designer. The design is definitely traditional country house (Nothing old fashioned about the bathrooms though). Lots of attentive staff, waiting to carry the bags and then drive the car away - perfect start to a celebration! I - Abigail Kirby-Harris - March 2020
One of our favourite hotels in Cornwall, in excellent form, welcoming, friendly and helpful as ever. I think The Nare’s description of itself as "the country house hotel by the sea" sums it up nicely. It is so comfortable in a somewhat old- fashioned way, but it must be precisely that which entices visitors (mostly of a "certain age") to return time and time again. Glorious settings, with lovely gardens. - Peter Govier - July 2019
Old-fashioned in all the best ways: sherry by the bedside, flowers and fruit, biscuits and tea and coffee. Five-course silver service dining room; hors d'oeuvre and dessert trolleys. The fish and shellfish were excellent. Feather-light scones and simple homemade cakes at tea in the lounge, alongside loose-leaf tea choices. . Deliciously warm swimming pool, large wooden hot tub on the cliff in sight of the sea. The views and quiet are glorious. I fell asleep to the sound of the sea every night. There are many spaces in the stunning gardens to sit and enjoy the views. And best of all, NO piped music! - Tessa Stuart - August 2017
As good as ever. Lovely, spacious room. Smiling faces throughout. Splendid breakfasts and scrumptious dinners.. Difficult to imagine being as comfortable away from home. - Peter Govier - May 2017
