Good Hotel Guide Review
There are ‘great views of the Camel Estuary’ from this 1920s, family-friendly hotel that is 'virtually on the famous golf course’. ‘The furnishings are truly delightful,’ wrote our inspector, ‘very Martha’s Vineyard. Clear colours, pale woodwork, great local seascape paintings.’ Bedrooms 'all have the same charming décor’. A fabulous family suite had 'a proper bathroom and shower room, a huge sitting room, a mini kitchen hidden in a cupboard, a giant bed – very comfy, a real haven of delight’. A tasting menu is served in Karrek restaurant on three nights. In the airy brasserie, produce is sourced from the family’s farm, which supports people with learning disabilities. Dishes might include roast pork chop, Dijon, burnt apple, and creative vegan options. ‘Delicious chicken-liver pâté’ came with a rather small brioche bun, 'tasty’ fishcake with red chilli-flavour mayonnaise and 'delicious poached egg… all perfectly pleasant’, but ‘hot chocolate fondant cake was tiny’, and the bill felt a bit steep. After breakfast, cross the fairway to little St Enodoc's Church, last resting place of Sir John Betjeman, where 'Safe, faint and surfy, laps the lowest tide'.
