Good Hotel Guide Review

‘This hotel is all about position – on the cliffs above the beach and beautiful gardens,’ a reader writes. Throughout, the look is coastal chic, with occasional driftwood lamps and artwork. Bedrooms have a fresh coastal palette, sea or countryside views. Courtyard rooms, with a Juliet balcony or decking, look out across the garden and Gerrans Bay. A reader's room had a 'very comfortable bed' and 'lovely views but only one opening window so it was stuffy on warm days'. Family rooms have a separate child’s sleeping space. An early supper is served to under-10s in the lounge, where parents, or adults preferring something simple, can also dine, while the terrace is the place for a cream tea or aperitifs. In the dining room, chef Aaron McNamara displays skills honed in Michelin-starred kitchens, in 'excellent dishes' such as Cornish brill, seaweed beurre blanc, sea kale, monk’s beard and coastal veg; or Tregothnan Estate deer. At breakfast there is kedgeree; a full Cornish with hog's pudding; brioche French toast with berries and crème fraiche. You can order a picnic for the beach or a walk on the South West Coast Path, which runs by. (Edward Gosnell, PA)
