Good Hotel Guide Review

Unlikely as it sounds, a 1950s office block in central Bristol is today a cool B&B with neat bedrooms, shiny rooftop caravans, a relaxed vibe and a courtyard garden. 'Good value for such an attractive and central location,' ten minutes from the harbour, with a 'sense of privacy and security', say readers. The three-storey building was converted by Carla and Andrew Brooks to provide bright, frills-free accommodation. Bedrooms are simply furnished with classy wallpapers, tongue-and-groove panelling, pale-wood bedsteads and colourful throws. Space is at a premium – wooden hooks replace wardrobes – and tiled bathrooms are compact. ‘Older folk might want more creature comforts,’ commented inspectors, though it was 'well lit and tastefully decorated'. Alternatively, Airstream-style silver caravans in the rooftop garden, squeezing in double bed and shower, have a sense of ‘pizzazz’ and are a fun retreat for families. Breakfasts, including home-made fruit compote, eggs Benedict, a full grill as well as daily specials, are served in the open-plan living area. Eclectically furnished with vintage and rustic furniture, it has large bifold glass doors open to the courtyard garden.

Comments about Brooks Guesthouse

It is certainly good value for such an attractive and central location, and it has a touch of surreal pizzazz about it with those improbable silver caravans gleaming on its roof. It would be fun for a young family to stay in these. Breakfast: was well executed and freshly cooked to order, with admirably prompt service. Despite the central location it is surprisingly quiet (no audible traffic or nightlife, - LF - January 2020
It is good value for such an attractive and central location, and has a touch of surreal pizzazz about it. Visitors approach through arched and gated walls which give it a sense of privacy and security, despite its being closely surrounded by neighbouring buildings. Our first-floor room overlooked the quiet courtyard garden towards surrounding buildings. Though not luxurious, it was neat, well lit and tastefully decorated. Bedside lighting could have been brighter. Breakfast was well executed and freshly cooked to order, with admirably prompt service. - LH - January 2020
