Good Hotel Guide Review

The River Eden loops past this red-sandstone mansion, topped with a cupola, on a wooded estate. Built in the 1700s, it burnt down in the 1930s, but the neo-Georgian rebuild is impressive. Country-house-style interiors have period furniture, tall windows, lots of comfy seating. Every bedroom is special. Dual-aspect Otterstone has river views, a wet-room shower, a huge in-room bath and working fireplace. Resident dog Rhubarb welcomes four-legged guests. At night there is a short menu of home-cooked dishes such as leek soup, pâté, steak pie, spinach and feta pastry, and signature chocolate pudding with ice cream. Afternoon tea on the terrace after a day’s fishing or a dip in the river is a treat.
