The Angel Hotel

Behind a neo-classical façade, this Georgian coaching inn is a happy mix of local drop-in, hotel and restaurant. Gregory Peck ate here in 1945 on his way to Fishguard to film Moby Dick. If, like him, you feel peckish, food is served all day in the Foxhunter Bar, with its deep leather sofas and wooden chairs and tables. Here, and in the Oak Room, the ‘interesting and inviting’ menu has something for everyone (steaks, seafood platter, veggie options, fish and chips). Bedrooms have a neutral palette, contemporary furnishings, a Villeroy & Boch or Fired Earth bathroom. Trusted readers were pleased to be upgraded to an ‘extremely comfortable, clean, quiet’ rear-facing deluxe room with ‘a super shower’. ‘Flowers were a nice touch’, as were ‘excellent table lights’ for reading. ‘Our bedroom was small but well equipped and very quiet,’ relates another. ‘The bathroom was one of the best we have encountered.’ ‘Very good breakfasts’ include bread and pastries from the Angel Bakery next door, while sister venture the Michelin-starred Walnut Tree Inn is a ten-minute taxi ride away. ‘A strikingly well-run hotel in an efficient but unobtrusive way.’ (Geoffrey Bignell, Robert Cooper, Martin Daly)
