You could not wish for a more glorious location than you find at Lorraine Hinkins and Alex Yorke’s 18th-century farmhouse B&B, with views to Cader Idris and the waters of Tal-y-llyn. Dyfi room has a window seat from which to gaze at the lake, an original fireplace, a large walk-in shower. Mawddach looks across the garden to the Dyfi and Tarren hills, and has three steps down to a bathroom with a shower over a corner bath. All rooms are in contemporary cottage style, with local artwork, a Welsh throw and fine toiletries. There is a well-stocked honesty bar, and an outdoor hydrotherapy hot tub, where you can soak weary limbs after a day’s mountain biking, hoping for a glimpse of visiting pine martens. Anglers will find plenty of choice between the lake and rivers. Stable Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet are available; mobile phone coverage is not. In the evening, the hosts can direct you to local restaurants. In the morning sit down to a full Welsh breakfast with home-baked bread, a Manx kipper, undyed smoked haddock or wild Alaskan smoked salmon.
