Good Hotel Guide Review

The superb setting of the Nye family’s hotel overlooking salt marshes to the sea and Scolt Head Island is matched by a ‘really good atmosphere’, say readers who go back year after year. 'It's hard to think of much that can be improved at this hotel,' write happy readers. Food is served outside from noon until night, allowing diners to fully appreciate the big-sky landscape and spectacular sunsets. You can eat sea-fresh shellfish cooked over coals and 'Norfolk tapas' in an open-sided marquee (ponchos provided), dine under a parasol in the courtyard garden, or by the fire in winter. In the glass-walled restaurant, with ‘excellent food and service’, the menu ranges from lobster and fish and chips to marsh-grazed sirloin steak. 'They offer two local white wines which were fantastic and the mussels are very local and delicious.' ‘Extremely comfortable’ bedrooms feature local artwork, a Norfolk seascape palette of green, blue, lavender and sand. The split-level ‘Room at the Top’ has a balcony and telescope to better appreciate the view. Spacious, dog-friendly garden rooms, built into the contours of the land under a sedum roof, have a private terrace. (DC, SP and others)

Comments about The White Horse

We came very soon after lockdown was lifted. It is also a pub, so there were a lot of the casual visitors. The staff were helpful and kind, and obviously delighted to be back at work. Everywhere was kept spotlessly clean; the rooms were not being serviced every day, which we were perfectly happy about. The food was still excellent. The dinner menu was less extensive than in earlier years and changed less frequently, not a problem in these strange times. What was available was a good selection – the scallops starter and pork main course were particularly memorable. - Sara Price - July 2020
It is rare to find a hotel that has a good location, nice rooms and excellent food. This has it all. We had a big room overlooking the sea marsh, which gave some great bird-watching when the tide was out. Comfy bed, lots of storage space, nice modern bathroom. We ate in on each of the four nights. I like fish and was thoroughly spoiled. My wife had vegetarian options on two nights, both got the thumbs-up. Starters equally good. Breakfast was fine: a perfect poached egg which can be a challenge for a kitchen. The staff were young, efficient and friendly. - Peter Anderson - September 2017
