The Hills were alive with the sound of ‘obvious customer contentment’ when our inspector called at Chris and Sarah Field’s pub in a village known for its Roman burial tumuli (the eponymous ‘hills’). Customers were clearly enjoying themselves as they sat on the heated, covered patio and dined on dishes such as venison cottage pie, Jerusalem artichoke and truffle risotto, or pizza from the outdoor oven. The ‘friendly, prompt service’, value for money, and good food all won praise. A reader was pleased to find 'particularly good provision for gluten-free meals'. This is a very family-friendly place; dogs are welcome too. The 17th-century building has been stylishly refurbished, while retaining its character. Smart 'light and airy, Scandi-style' bedrooms – four in an annexe, another four (including a two-bed flat) above the pub – have a muted palette, coffee machine, luxury toiletries. There is also a comfortable sitting room with books and games. ‘The garden is basically a mown meadow, sloping gently towards the River Granta.’ Cambridge is 20 minutes away, Stansted Airport 40 minutes if you wish to pay a flying visit.
