With treehouses, boathouses and shepherds' huts scattered around 70 acres of glorious grounds on the Consall Hall Estate, The Tawny promises bucolic bliss – perfect if you want your own space but enjoy all the services of a hotel. A former colliery site, landscaped over 50 years by the late William Podmore, it is a haven for wildlife, with pools, caves and follies. Porters on buggies transport your luggage to your chosen berth, each with an outdoor spa bath, coffee machine and free minibar. An inspector's two-bedroom tree house (‘more a chalet on stilts’) had 'a definite wow factor, painted in earthy tones, with wooden floor and beamed ceiling’, a freestanding bath by a floor-to-ceiling window looking onto a lake. In the double-height Plumicorn, with 'dreamy vistas' through its wall of glass, new chef Andrew Watts cooks 'delicious fine-dining cuisine' such as hay-smoked chicken, leeks, celeriac fondant, mandarin sauce; creative vegan options. 'Breakfast is a treat, too.' There is 'a sleek bar with comfy sofas', a snooker room, spa and outdoor pool. 'A beautiful place to get back to nature, ideal for loved-up couples, but also accommodates families.'
