Good Hotel Guide Review

The humble setting of this former coaching inn, half a mile from the Scottish border, belies its chic bedrooms and creative cooking. Owners Gerald and Margo Smith, of nearby Netherby Hall, have created a stylish interior – soft colours, tweedy fabrics, modern art – while retaining a traditional pub character of exposed stone walls and wood-burning stove. In the kitchen, Chris Archer has gained a well-deserved Michelin star for his skilful treatment of seasonal produce, much from the Hall’s walled garden. The tasting menu offers dishes such as halibut with asparagus and brown shrimp, local lamb with stuffed morel and baked Amalfi lemon custard. Bedrooms – some in the adjoining converted barn with high ceilings and exposed beams, others up a swanky glass-banister staircase – have tartan throws and headboards, rustic wooden cladding and designer bathrooms. All enjoy views across Cumbria or into Scotland, fresh flowers from the Hall and home-made shortbread. Breakfast in the conservatory – with more views – includes freshly squeezed juice, omelettes, and avocado and poached eggs.
