Good Hotel Guide Review
Amid beautiful landscaped gardens, this Tudor black-and-white hall house is the cherished home of Simon and Gary White, who welcome guests as friends. It is redolent of history, with stone fireplaces and many original features. The cruciform layout and a putative priest hole hint at past connections with recusant Catholics, while an enigmatic inscription cautions: ‘Wallk Knave. What look est at.’ Don’t be discouraged: the hospitality is extremely warm. The best room, the beamed Charles II suite, has an antique four-poster, a modern bathroom with roll-top bath and walk-in shower. Simon (Newcastle’s mayor) was a winner in Channel 4’s ‘Four in a Bed’. Breakfast, in a Victorian conservatory, brings barista coffees, eggs from the happily free-ranging hens.
