Do you remember an inn, Miranda? Hilaire Belloc certainly remembered this Georgian coaching inn, from which he described setting out in The Four Men. In ‘a historic village of lovely little medieval houses’, it is ‘an excellent place for locals and for a good meal out’. Bedrooms are named after people with historical links to the pub. Hilaire, the cheapest, has a rich, earthy palette – no tedding and spreading of straw for bedding, but a Hypnos king-size and antiques. Pooke, overlooking a 1921 war memorial clock tower, recalls the first landlord to run an inn on this site. All rooms have a monsoon shower and are ‘in good decorative nick’. Downstairs, food and drinks are served in a single, open-plan, dog-friendly space. There is also ‘a little paved courtyard with tables and chairs, lit with fairy lights’. ‘Carefully sourced and well-cooked food’ includes Romney Marsh lamb, chargrilled beef or lentil burger, fish and ‘really good, big chips’ – proper pub fare at proper pub prices. ‘The rhubarb was delicious.’ Breakfast brings ‘the usual, with vegetarian options, light and fluffy scrambled free-range eggs’.
