Good Hotel Guide Review
A warm Yorkshire welcome and accomplished cooking are the hallmarks of this Georgian town house on a characterful cobbled street near the centre of a handsome market town. Run for almost 20 years by David Todd, it has an intimate feel. Public rooms are traditionally but elegantly furnished, with modern art adding eye-catching touches; there’s a wood-burning stove in the lounge and a cosy, atmospheric bar. The highlight of most guests’ stay is dinner, served in the Georgian dining room aglow with candlelight and polished oak tables. An amuse-bouche could be followed by Whitby crab with tempura samphire, and local venison with wild mushrooms. A delicate pre-dessert fills the gap before the dessert proper: perhaps Yorkshire parkin with poached rhubarb and cream. Bedrooms have a mix of modern and antique furniture, large custom-made beds and views over the garden or River Swale. The hi-tech bathroom might have a roll-top bath or Swedish shower. Breakfast is a feast that includes freshly squeezed juice, home-made bread, poached haddock, buttermilk pancakes and a full grill.
