Everything looks picture perfect outside this black-and-white timbered medieval inn overlooking Chiddingfold’s village green. Step inside and the charm continues with a bar serving pints amid medieval carvings, oak beams, stained-glass windows and an inglenook fireplace. Dine here or in the oak-panelled dining room on Modern British dishes such as chicken breast on pearl barley risotto, as well as pub classics. Bedrooms are in a contemporary country-house style in the newer wing or rich and characterful, with four-posters, sloping floors and ancient beams, in the original part. Some have roll-top baths. Breakfast, served late at the weekend, has home-made jams and pastries, and cooked choices from a full grill to avocado and poached egg.
