Pull off the A303 to find this pub with rooms, which set the style for the small Chickpea group. The 200-year-old inn is a happy mix of traditional pub comforts and contemporary touches, with deep-blue walls, beams, a log fire, wheelback chairs, benches, brasses, and amusingly eclectic artworks. Bedrooms are smart and simple, with a neutral palette, little blasts of colour, hand-made lampshades, Land & Water toiletries. A short menu mixes classics (fish pie, burger, bangers) with inventive modern cooking of dishes such as roasted cauliflower, crispy cavolo nero, wild garlic pesto, patatas bravas. Meanwhile, a pizza trailer, Nole at the Bell, is fired up on occasion.
