Good Hotel Guide Review

Overlooking the reed beds and salt marsh of Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve, this ‘lovely little pub’ is not a local boozer but a very good restaurant-with-rooms, a sister venture to The Halfway Bridge, Lodsworth (see entry). Oak-beamed bedrooms have a subtle palette of pale blue, sage and taupe, with some overlooking open farmland. A reader’s deluxe room had a perpendicular beam at the centre – a sort of 17th-century jack post, more curiosity than hazard. 'The bed was very comfy.' There are rooms in adjacent Crab Cottage, which has a sitting room and a kitchen with an espresso machine, should you want to self-cater, but a full English awaits next door. The restaurant is stylish, and also comes with a log-burner in an inglenook for chillier days. Specials are chalked up on a fish-shaped blackboard, while the à la carte menu brings dishes such as traditional fish soup, baked crab gratin with fennel and watercress salad; beer battered fish and chips, and steaks. A separate vegetarian/vegan menu might include sweet potato gnocchi, Moroccan spiced chickpea tagine. ‘The staff are young, efficient and friendly. We will return.'

Comments about The Crab & Lobster

Lovely little pub with rooms, on the quay at Sindlesham. Our superior room which was spacious. Plenty of storage space and a view over the salt marsh. The bed was comfy though a bigger duvet would have prevented some tugs of war in the middle of the night! The food is very good. Breakfast was ok though I would have liked some cereal. Nevertheless, porridge was fine and scrambled eggs were perfect, not always the case in many establishments. The staff are young, efficient and friendly. Covid precautions were reassuring. - Peter Anderson - October 2020
A restaurant-wit -rooms rather than a hotel. The food is brilliant especially if you like fish. The puds are a delight. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss. Our bedroom, Room 4, was in a converted attic space reached up a twisty staircase. Its ceiling was low and and it was easy to crack a head getting out of bed. Room 1 is a delight. - Peter Anderson - September 2019
Excellent location. Very quiet; small. Our deluxe room on the first floor was spacious and comfortable. Big bed, separate seating area. Bathroom modern; powerful monsoon shower over the bath. Plenty of storage. Only gripe - it's an old building so we heard the floorboards creak in the room upstairs when anybody moved about, not really a problem except when they visited the loo at 3am! Reasonably priced. - Peter Anderson - May 2017
