Good Hotel Guide Review
Behind the street front of a Georgian coaching inn in a picturesque medieval hilltop town, a series of ancient timber-frame buildings are subsumed into one smart hotel. The George returns to the Guide fully refurbished after a fire. Co-owner Katie Clarke worked on film sets, and there's a definite sense of drama in the chic interiors, where the reception desk was a former church altar, bedrooms have brightly patterned wallpaper and fabric headboards, and antique sailcloth is hung on the restaurant walls. ‘It feels very well cared for,’ said our inspector, ‘a place you’d feel happy to return to’ after a day exploring otherworldly Romney Marsh. Bedrooms have bespoke furniture, Frette linens, a Roberts radio, REN toiletries. Some have a copper roll-top bath with power shower. At lunch, an organic halloumi salad was good if a bit light; ‘cod and chips, delivered to the next table, aroused envy’. Other choices included Rye Bay bouillabaisse, a burger, vegan dishes, with a longer menu at night. At breakfast there are kippers, buttermilk pancakes, a full English or vegan. 'The shell grotto ladies' loo is worth a visit’, whether or not you need to powder your nose.
