Good Hotel Guide Review

An equestrian statue of Frederick, Prince of Wales, marks your arrival at this glorious Jacobean-cum-Georgian mansion, a hotel since the late 1980s. ‘A beautiful hotel and grounds, perfect in every way’, it gazes over an 18th-century landscape, with Ionic temple, obelisk, a lake spanned by an arch from the old Kew Bridge. Restored by Historic House Hotels and owned by the National Trust (see Middlethorpe Hall, York, and Bodysgallen Hall & Spa, Llandudno), it is wonderfully presented, with perfectly judged antiques and spectacular original features. ‘The furnishings throughout are superb,’ writes a reader. The accommodation ranges from classic double rooms with coffee machine and home-made biscuits to ‘royal’ rooms and suites, some with a four-poster. There are further rooms and dog-friendly suites in a converted 18th-century riding school. Dress formally to dine on elaborate dishes such as pan-seared fillet of sea bream with saffron polenta or roast breast of duck with artichoke purée and truffle sauce. ‘Catering at the highest level made our stay a real treat.’ The hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux. Comments about Hartwell House

The staff were most helpful and polite and the food was superb. It was a real treat to stay in such lovely accommodation in this historic yet well appointed hotel. - Ralph Wilson - October 2021
A beautiful country house with personal service at its core. We have been a few times for lunch before and used the spa, but this was the first time we have stayed. It was my 40th birthday, and the upgraded us to a royal room- the tapestry room with wood panelled walls, feeling truly special. They have done their best during the Covid period to provide guests with a relaxing and safe stay. The service is perfect. We enjoyed the food especially the venison...and the pre dinner drinks in the library with a truly special atmosphere. - Charlotte Clark - December 2020
I took my 94-year-old mother and my wife for Saturday night as a treat. We had '"classic" rooms on the second floor, with my mother in a room with disabled facilities. She was unable to use the shower, which was in the bath and so inaccessible for her, but otherwise we were very happy with everything. The bedrooms are sumptuous. Everywhere felt warm. The staff were excellent, serving tea and cake after we arrived around 5.30 pm. The buffet breakfast was superb. An awesome place to stay! - Geoffrey Bignell - December 2019
It would be easy to be to beguiled by Hartwell's history, elegance and proportions and the immaculate presentation of the building and its grounds. None of these makes a good hotel, however, without good management and staff, and Hartwell House has these in abundance. - Matthew & Miriam Caminer - January 2018
