Good Hotel Guide Review
In a small former mill town once renowned for its cashmere, this Victorian doctor’s house with 'beautiful views to the hills' is run as a much-loved guest house by Lisa and Steve Davies. Cosy bedrooms, most in charming country-cottage style, are supplied with fresh milk. Guests can relax by the drawing room fire, enjoy a traditional breakfast in the dining room, and order light bites in Café Sitooterie. Book ahead for a dinner of seasonal produce – maybe roast Borders venison, bean cassoulet, green salad; chocolate marquise, berry compote, vanilla ice cream. They also host tastings of wines far more palatable (if less efficacious against gout and cutaneous eruptions) than the sulphurous water from the fabled local St Ronan's Wells.
