With porte cochère, crenellated tower and fine Victorian interiors, this country house overlooking Loch Portree is redolent of the history of the Macdonald family, which has lived there for more than 200 years. The grand entrance hall is adorned with animal trophies, the dining room hung with ancestral portraits. A guest sitting room is positively thronged with comfy seating. Bedrooms, spread over three floors, are filled with antiques and original features. None has a TV; most have an over-bath shower. The dual-aspect master bedroom can sleep a family, while two rooms in the stables block stay open throughout the winter. Guests are hosted by Jasper Buxton and his wife, Iona, and can order a light supper of soup and cheese, charcuterie or a vegan platter. In the morning, breakfast on porridge, a full Scottish, a kipper or smoked haddock. Explore the 20-acre grounds, which are home to the Skye Shrubs garden centre, and follow the path down to the village. Skipper Jasper offers half-day sailing trips aboard the yacht Breeze, out to the Sound of Raasay, where you can take in views of the Cuillins over a lunch of smoked salmon and prosecco.
