Good Hotel Guide Review

Perfectly placed to enjoy a distillery tour or to follow the whisky trail, Sonia Marshall’s Victorian house in the heart of Speyside stands in mature grounds on the edge of a swathe of the ancient Scots pine woodland that surrounds Grantown. The ambience is more intimate guest house than hotel, with just six bedrooms (double and twin), a wide choice of malt whiskies to sample by the fire, and a locally sourced, four-course dinner cooked by the hostess. Readers who arrived soaked from a fell walk were delighted to have their wet gear whisked away to the drying room. They reported that their room, Craigevar, had 'lots of space, terrific views, a very comfortable bed, a bathroom with doubled-ended bath and separate shower'. At dinner, the 'food was excellent, especially the steak, pork tenderloin and the rack of lamb'. After a freshly cooked breakfast of Scottish produce that 'could not be faulted' with 'particularly flavoursome' smoked salmon and scrambled egg, head out to explore the Cairngorms national park, fish in the Spey, or take an exhilarating ride on the funicular to the summit of Cairngorm Mountain. Comments about Culdearn House

Our stay at William & Sonia Marshall’s delightful, traditional, small country house could not have been bettered. We so enjoyed their warm, friendly personal service, our comfortable bedroom with excellent en suite facilities and the superb food. William, with the help of Lizzie, a good-humoured local lady, provided attentive service at breakfast and before, during and after dinner. There was a good choice of drinks including wines and especially whiskies, William’s experience being educational, helpful and amusing. Culdearn House is top quality - Geoff Float - May 2018
A lovely hotel in s beautiful part of Scotland. A lovely bedroom. At dinner all the dishes were simply served and cooked to perfection. The Marshalls are a very friendly coup who obviously have the welfare of their guests at heart. - JT - May 2018
We had a wonderful time. First-class in every sense. Warm greeting; Bedrooms uniquely decorated and with all the essentials. Lovelhy lounge. Food out of this world. - Terri Phillips - January 2018
My wife and I recently stayed at this wonderful Victorian country house hotel. Our spacious bedroom (Cragevar) was beautifully furnished, well appointed, with a splendid view over gardens and woodland. Following pre-dinner drinks in the superbly decorated drawing room, we enjoyed a splendid four-course dinner. The menus changed daily, and all meals were beautifully cooked and presented by Sonia. William's fine wine list was extensive - but as naught compared to the number of malt whiskys on offer! A wonderful stay. - Professor Kevin Sykes - June 2017
The attentive hosts seemed genuinely concerned for my well-being when I returned cold and damp from the mountains. They were happy to give me early breakfast when I departed by an early train. The fillet steak at dinner was probably the best since my last visit. - Mike Bennett - March 2017
