Good Hotel Guide Review

Overlooking the River Hodder in the Forest of Bowland, this sprawling 18th-century manor house is joyously traditional, with stone-flagged floors, open fires and bags of atmosphere. A reader on his tenth visit said that it was ‘just as special as ever’. Run by third-generation Bowmans, with ‘very friendly and helpful staff’, it is cheery and dog-friendly, with local ales in the bar and an established reputation for its food. An 11-strong kitchen brigade turns out ‘superb food’, such as slow-roast lamb shoulder, and ‘the Whitewell Fish Pie, one of the best’. Readers praised the ‘excellent wine list (and wine shop)’. Bedrooms are ‘all very individual, full of old charm and eccentricities, with excellent bathrooms’. Expect antiques, deep sofas, thick curtains, books and artwork. ‘We had a lovely room overlooking the river, with a large bay window – ideal for watching the mallards sailing past.’ Many have working fires or wood-burners, some have beams, hand-painted wallpaper, Victorian cabinet baths and four-posters. Go fishing, borrow an electric bike or enjoy a board game by the fire. ‘Lovely meal, excellent service and the same standard at breakfast.’ (Mike Craddock, Bill Wood)

Comments about The Inn at Whitewell

We have just had a return visit. It is even better than we remembered. The food is outstanding, both in the bar and the restaurant. The housekeeping is exemplary ,and all the staff are friendly and helpful. The bar is packed every night but the food arrives quickly. One rings down for complimentary tea when one wakes in the morning-what a luxury! - Mary Milne-Day - May 2019
It never ceases to impress. Stunning location. Busy but tranquil at night. Décor grandly eccentric, conjuring up an image of a heartier England of the past. I could happily dine every day on the fish pie. - Mike Craddock - August 2018
A lovely place to stay. We enjoyed the food and drink. The atmosphere is informal and friendly but totally professional. - Rosemary Melling - April 2018
A lovely atmosphere; a warm welcome, an excellent, large bedroom. The food is good and reasonably priced. The bar can get busy; the restaurant is more relaxed. The cooked breakfasts were good but the healthy options were limited. An open fire here and there, and a good selection of daily papers. They provide an excellent guide to local walks. They organised a ghillie - very professional - who made the day enjoyable. - Max Lickfold - November 2017
