Good Hotel Guide Review

Away from the Lake District’s hot spots, in quiet Lorton Vale north of Buttermere, this whitewashed farmhouse B&B mixes rustic authenticity with modern comforts. Dating from the 17th century, and enlarged in Georgian times, it retains original features of slate-flagged floors, open beams, sturdy oak doors and big fireplaces. With its backdrop of fields and fells, lawned garden and atmospheric spaces – including a hayloft, cart shed and milking parlour – it’s a popular wedding venue, which means that B&B availability is fitted around these bookings. Ever-cheery owner Hazel Thompson greets guests with a cream tea to take in the fire-warmed sitting room or on the lawn. Spacious bedrooms are rich with character – exposed-stone walls, oak beams – luxuriously updated with thick curtains, brass beds and impressive oak four-posters, and country antiques. Bathrooms are huge, with perhaps a roll-top bath. With those views, you won’t mind the lack of TVs. Two rooms are separate from the farmhouse, with private entrances. Breakfast is a homely affair in the cosy dining room while supper options include the local pub or Kirkstile Inn, three miles away.

Comments about New House Farm

Stayed here five years running, best B&B in the Lakes, peaceful, quiet, wonderful hot tub in grounds, wonderful host in Hazel Thompson, everything about it is five star, rooms, breakfast, roaring log fire, wish we were still there. - John Thompson - January 2017
