Just a short walk from the tourist honeypot of Grasmere, this extended Victorian country house in wooded gardens is on the River Rothay, set against a backdrop of fells. Now owned by Bespoke Hotels, its interiors are designed for guest comfort, with contemporary furnishings, nothing showy. Many of the better rooms have a balcony or terrace, comfy seating. Dogs are allowed in certain rooms only and can accompany you to dine in the Garden Lounge. In the glass-walled Garden Restaurant, the menu includes dishes such as beef sirloin, braised ox tongue, celeriac and lime slaw, cod bouillabaisse, grills and curries. It feels professional, well cared for; a good place to relax after a day’s fell walking.
