Good Hotel Guide Review

For many guests, Hazel Bank is the epitome of a small country-house hotel, with 'fantastic food, a great wine selection, charming hosts' alongside a picturesque valley setting, captivating views and walks from the doorstep. Sitting above Rosthwaite village ‘in a quiet part of Borrowdale’, the Victorian house has a warmth that is thanks to owners Gary and Donna MacRae. One guest reported that their six-day stay was 'like a pleasant house party'. Interiors are comfortable with soft carpets, polished wood and vases of flowers, but not too fussy; after all, why compete with those views! Bedrooms have a simple elegance with pretty wallpapers, handsome headboards, top-notch bathrooms and breathtaking views. Spoiling touches include sherry and home-made biscuits. Donna’s evening meals are equally spoiling: canapés in the lounge are followed by a four-course affair with dishes such as Lakeland fillet of beef or aubergine and courgette schnitzel with tomato and basil salsa. Breakfast is a feast of local produce including home-made muesli, Manx kippers, and a full Cumbrian, accompanied by sightings of red squirrels. (Sir William Reid, John Barnes, and others)
