Good Hotel Guide Review

Guests are made to feel like old friends at this wisteria-clad, light-filled 1960s house with its peerless views over gardens to the Howardian hills. Hosts Phillip Gill and Anton van der Horst have the happy knack of creating rooms and an atmosphere that are ‘deeply relaxing’, helped in no small measure by the picture windows that ensure striking views at every turn. Large, luminous bedrooms are full of warm colours, brightly patterned fabrics and a classic country-house style. They are filled with art and books, as are the two sitting rooms. Thoughtful touches include binoculars (great for birdwatching and rabbit-spotting), pot plants, chocolates and Penhaligon toiletries. Enjoy complimentary tea and home-made cakes while gazing over the ‘lovely gardens’, which continue to delight faithful guests who have witnessed them mature over two decades. Phillip’s cooking is ‘out of this world’, says a regular returning for the 12th time, and although dinner is no longer offered, guests can fortunately still enjoy his legendary scrambled eggs at breakfast: ‘Nobody does that better!’ An ‘utterly splendid’ stay. 'We look forward to staying again.' (AW, FT)

Comments about Shallowdale House

Their first guests after the lockdown, we returned once more and were greeted as old friends but in a covid safe way. Our two-night stay en-route to Scotland was deeply relaxing with Philip's well thought out meals (a cherry clafouti was particularly tasty) and Anton's care for our welfare and comfort. The gardens are now a mature and lovely wonder as we have seen them develop over the past 20 years. We look forward to staying again. - Mrs Frances M Thomas - July 2020
Our fourth stay - like coming home. Bedrooms are spacious and well equipped. Dinners were outstanding, prepared by an imaginative cook. The art is amazing and varied. - Mary Hewson - August 2018
