Dee and Richard Slade’s ‘well-run’ hotel, restaurant and village pub stands out for its ‘laudable’ approach to sustainable tourism. Modern menus, ‘well cooked and varied’, use locally sourced produce and the bounty from the kitchen garden and mushroom farm, with duck, chicken and salmon smoked on site. The walled garden is a popular spot for birds and red squirrels; the dark sky observatory is simply ‘amazing’. 'Food excellent, staff attentive and enthusiastic,' summed up a guest. Bedrooms, with bright furnishings, are in the main building and in wooden lodges to the rear. Some may be ‘on the small side’, but one reader's was 'very spacious and well equipped with water bottles for walkers'. (Christine Smythe, Anthony Livesey)

Well run pub. Nice food. Efficient young staff, a mixture of central European and local. If you want to sleep on a weekday after 7.30 ask for a room at the back as the school buses pick up outside . - - September 2020

This hotel is clearly for enthusiastic stargazers who are also as environmentalists. Guests no doubt like the rural atmosphere and the proximity to Hadrian’s Wall and the majestic flow of the North Tyne River. We enjoyed a very good dinner in the main dining room, a welcoming pre-dinner drink in the old-world lounge (without, however, a fire on a coldish night), and a satisfying breakfast in the bright extension looking over the colourful and interesting garden. Our room, though very small, was thoughtfully equipped. The bathroom was a good size and the toiletries were locally made. The food was excellent, well-served and varied. The wine list, too, was very tempting. We disliked the intrusive and shrill background music, and we found a lack of any personal, friendly contact. We had one of the new-looking luxury lodges comprising a huge bedroom and a large ensuite bathroom with two sinks. There was plenty of hot water for the large spa bath. The bedroom had everything we needed, including two comfortable armchairs a sofa, a large TV. Fresh fruit was provided on day one. The room could have done with some pictures to make it a little more attractive. The dinners were good wholesome food cooked reasonably well but not exceptional. Breakfast was again OK; there was a good choice of jams. We thought that some of the staff lacked some of the requisite customer service skills - Steven Hur - September 2017
