Good Hotel Guide Review
With its wonky roofline, leaded windows, honeyed stone and distinctive black-and-white Tudor wing, this family-run hotel overlooks the green of a much-photographed, quintessential Cotswold village. Outside seating under clipped yews creates a convivial feel, while the 16th-century interiors incorporate cottages, a former smithy and bakery. A horsy, hunting, racing theme runs throughout, inspired by its proximity to Cheltenham. Bedrooms combine rustic details with contemporary fabrics and paint shades. ‘Snug’ and ‘cosy’ rooms are just that, while ‘comfy’ rooms have a lounge area. One spacious room has a four-poster; another dog-friendly one has a private terrace garden. All have a coffee machine, Roberts radio and Molton Brown products. In the glass-roofed Tattersalls brasserie and the galleried Jockey Bar, an eclectic menu runs from a Cornish crab sandwich to fish and chips, spiced Moroccan-style cauliflower and chickpea roulade, roast pork rump with chasseur sauce… After breakfast you might walk up to the iconic 18th-century hilltop folly Broadway Tower, in a deer park, where William Morris spent holidays, or you can hire e-bikes.

A good Cotswold touring base. Décor is bold and imaginative. Reception was efficient and courteous. Our bedroom with a horsey theme was smart and well laid out. The cooking style is modern and fairly elaborate: it worked well and was interesting. Breakfast, accompanied by pointless jazz, was perfectly adequate.
