Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A stone’s throw from everything Oxford has to offer’, Jeremy Mogford’s second hotel (see the Old Bank) impressed our inspectors with its ‘peaceful, classy vibe’. Occupying a wisteria-draped 17th-century stone manor house, it has ‘sophisticated, intimate and stylish interiors’ with ‘striking art lining every wall’. Bedrooms, some with Juliet balcony or private terrace, are ‘immaculately kept’, with fabrics in the signature deep red, purple and grey. The two new Churchill suites are ‘something special’, filled with photographs and memorabilia. All have a handmade bed, a minibar with milk and treats, a marble-clad bathroom with under-floor heating, Noble Isle toiletries. ‘Nice touches include a hand-written welcome note and a beautifully presented collection of stories by the shortlisted entrants to the annual Mogford Prize.’ Guests have use of bikes and the library. In the ‘cosy and intimate’ restaurant, a ‘sophisticated menu’ includes dishes such as a ‘very good’ crispy potato terrine; lamb rump with wild garlic sauce. ‘Staff are very professional, welcoming and friendly.’ ‘Complimentary parking is a real bonus in Oxford.’
