Zoe and Chris Hipwell’s small townhouse hotel is filled with historic interest, and overlooks a bend in the River Derwent. Most of the restored features (ornate glasswork, a tiled entrance hall, the wood-and-glass bar) date to the ownership of Victorian wine merchant Job Hodgkinson, who stored his wares in the Roman-era cave. The homely bedrooms (some dog-friendly) are traditionally furnished; one has a four-poster bed and a roll-top bath; most have river views. There is a terraced garden with space to sit, and an intimate restaurant serving home-cooked Modern British dishes. Well located for exploring the Peak District, the hotel has pleasant walks from the door; stately homes are an easy drive away.
