Good Hotel Guide Review

An Edwardian homage to 17th-century style, this beautiful manor house with rich Jacobean-inspired interiors is run as a luxury hotel with fine-dining restaurant. House bedrooms have fine antique furniture, views to the Derbyshire Dales or over beautiful, well-tended gardens and arboretum. Annexe rooms in their own walled garden have a more contemporary look. Four, on the ground floor, have a bath and walk-in shower. All have an espresso machine, handmade biscuits and luxury toiletries. Readers found their 'room was great – roomy, comfortable, quiet, with bath and separate shower'. However, they were less enamoured with the 'very poor breakfast choices' when 'a request for cereal was met with bemusement'; they couldn't sample dinner as they inadvertently booked at the start of the week when the restaurant was closed. Head chef Adam Thackeray’s menus, for omnivores and vegetarians, make creative use of local, home-grown ingredients, in dishes such as Derbyshire venison, elderberry and celeriac or pot roast cauliflower with passionfruit and beurre noisette. Daytime activities include fly-fishing and foraging.
