Good Hotel Guide Review
Full of 'old-fashioned eccentricity', this much-loved bolt-hole in Marylebone with its clubby atmosphere has a loyal following. A regular loves the fact that 'old virtues remain unchanged – friendly personal welcome, bags whisked to and from taxis, charming public rooms, exemplary housekeeping, quiet, civilised demeanour'. Owned by the Miller family since 1921, it occupies four former Georgian town houses as one seamless whole. Bedrooms have period and contemporary furniture, a Savoir bed, L’Occitane toiletries. ‘Those at the quieter rear’, overlooking Manchester Mews, are snug; if you want lots of space, suites have a sitting room. Fires burn in cosy lounges, and afternoon tea is served. 'No dinner currently but a formidable breakfast menu' with 'little silver pots and dishes' on the table is on offer until 11.30am. 'The cheese omelette sets you up very well.' Readers who love the place are indulgent of occasional shortcomings, such as a lack of tea-making facilities in the bedroom, which are 'no more than a minor blemish on the face of a beautiful but ageing woman'. 'Hooray for Durrants.' (Keith Salway, RC)
