Good Hotel Guide Review

'In a beautiful position' on the shores of Loch Na Dal, in the lee of a wooded hill, this former hunting lodge offers 'comfortable bedrooms and public rooms and excellent food'. It was the family home of Lord and Lady Macdonald until 1972, when it was opened to paying guests; now it is managed by daughter Isabella. Roaring fires, antiques, ancestral portraits and possessions lend a special appeal. Public rooms and several bedrooms have been recently upgraded. In the main North Lodge, bedrooms are presented in country-house style, in colours that reflect the natural surroundings. There is a more contemporary look to those in the purpose-built South Lodge, with its own drawing room and honesty bar. One North Lodge annexe room is accessed by a spiral staircase. Reader’s tip: ‘establish beforehand the allocated bedroom’ to ensure it meets your needs. At lunch there are imaginative tasting plates, while at night, Jordan Webb cooks a three-course, three-choice menu of local and home-grown produce in the atmospheric dining room. Maybe Skye roe deer, turnip, bramble jus; pan-fried cod, sweet potato, charred corn, clam vinaigrette. The ghillie is on hand for fishing, stalking and foraging. (CH)
