Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Still the best all-around value for money in Paris.’ A reader who found this unpretentious hotel in the Guide 20 years ago has remained faithful. Near St-Germain-des-Pres, it dates from about 1820. It was frequented by Sartre, de Beauvoir, Hemingway, Brigitte Bardot, Miles Davis, the Rolling Stones and many other famous names. Fans like its Bohemian atmosphere, 1950s-style décor and reasonable prices. More than one artist paid for accommodation with a painting. Xavier Blanchot, grandson of the founder, runs an interned company from here. Some rooms face the lively rue de Buci, but there is double glazing. ‘Great staff, family-owned, clean, basic rooms with private bath and tub, good breakfast (extra), great location. No TV or radio (it’s a bit like staying in a sort of monastery, which I love), but free internet and also computers. It ain’t fancy but who wants to pay for that? I like clean, quiet and functional.’ (Michael Cunningham)
