Good Hotel Guide Review
A ‘charming country B&B’, Sir Bourchier (‘George’) and Lady Caroline Wrey’s 18th-century farmhouse in Tarka the Otter country ‘hits all the bases’ for families, dogs and horses. Guide insiders describe a bucolic scene, with ‘chickens and ducks pottering around the garden’. The hosts are warm and relaxed. ‘On our first visit we were invited into their lovely sitting room with a vast fireplace, heirlooms and family photographs, for tea and brownies and an enjoyable chat with George, while a Jack Russell snored on the sofa beside him.’ A hayloft suite, with roses round the door, was ‘almost a mini-apartment, with a seating area and Caroline’s very pretty curtains’ (she has written books on this subject). The look is ‘cosy, cottagey, pampering, lost in a happier era’. A barn room was ‘slightly more contemporary’, mixing rustic features with ‘new wood floors, a smart modern bathroom’. In the morning ‘guests sit around a huge table beside a log fire, with dogs underfoot’, for a breakfast with free-range eggs from the farm, before saddling up or striding out to explore the estate and nearby beaches. ‘A wonderful place, and tremendous value.’ (KQ)
