Glengarry Castle Hotel

Turn off the A82 onto a wooded drive and you will pass the emotive ruins of Invergarry Castle in the grounds of this Scottish baronial mansion overlooking Loch Oich. Long run as a hotel by the hands-on MacCallum family, it is old-fashioned in an appealing way. Beyond the pine-panelled reception there are spacious public rooms with deep sofas, comfy armchairs, blazing log fires, oil paintings and, at tea o’clock, freshly baked scones. Bedrooms, from a single to deluxe four-poster rooms, have traditional decor, sprigs, stripes and pelmets, maybe a bay window with a view of the loch and resplendent rhododendrons. Beds are made up with sheets and blankets. Bathrooms have a bath and walk-in shower or an over-bath shower. At night, the menu features local, seasonal and foraged ingredients in dishes such as breast of Perthshire wood pigeon with pickled rhubarb, beetroot and wild garlic; and fillet of North Sea hake, crab dauphine potato and pickled Arisaig mussels. There are vegetarian options, too. After breakfast, you can fish for brown trout or stroll to the castle, which twice hosted Bonnie Prince Charlie.
